Can you hear me now?

Fern and I were both born with hearing loss in our left ears. We didn't know this until we took the standard hearing tests given in grade school. I think my parents were told it might help to have our tonsils and adenoids removed but nothing was said about a hearing aid. Because we didn't show any outward signs of hearing loss, nothing was done and that was that.

While we may have hearing loss I don't find it bothersome or different than anyone else hears. I don't talk on the phone using my left ear because the person sounds far away and not as clear as when I use my right ear. If someone wants to whisper a secret, I turn my head so I can have them whisper in my "good ear". If I'm lying in bed watching tv and turn on my left side I hear the tv the same. If I turn on my right side, I don't hear it very much, if at all. When I watch tv with my family I don't need it turned up louder than them to hear it so I always just assumed I could hear just about as well as anyone else. Almost like my right ear over compensated for my left. HA

Last week Fern decided to have her hearing checked. She felt like she was saying-Excuse me-Pardon me and WHAT? a lot more often. She was telling me how they were doing the tests and it started out like the standard tone test and then the lady said there would be static in her right ear as she talked to Fern in her left ear as though she were wearing a hearing aid in that ear. As soon as she started talking Fern said she started to cry. It was overwhelming and really caught her off guard to hear clearly for the first time in her life. So she put in an order for a very small hearing aid that will fit right into her ear. I will be making an appointment soon. I want to know what I've been missing out on all these years.

REVENGE

REVENGE, my new obsession. I wanted everyone else to enjoy it as much as Fern and I do so I talked my family into watching. One by one they finally gave into all my begging and pleading, I'm sure just to shut me up. First my husband who started watching at 7 one night and kept saying he was going to watch- just one more- until 2 in the morning. My son and his girlfriend watched it next and both are hooked. My youngest daughter was last and she is obsessed too. She has told her friends about Revenge and they are here almost every night catching up before a new episode airs next Wednesday. We have it on hulu plus by the way but I googled Revenge and there are sites you can watch for free.

I think Revenge is the best new series that has been on t.v. in years. Each episode has so much going on and by the end you just can't wait for the next week. Start watching (insert a little begging and pleading) you will thank me too!

Faith, Prayer, and a Long Journey

Back in August I told you how my MIL had septic shock, emergency surgery and was put on a vent. When trying to take her off the vent didn't go well, the doctor told us to gather the family and they would try to take her off the next day. While it went well and she was eating jello by that evening, little did we know this was only the beginning of a long 5 1/2 month journey.

Once she recovered, she went to the nursing home for physical therapy. About a week and a half later she was throwing up and went back to the hospital. The doctor said she had what he called a frozen colon and he had to operate once more to remove and repair part of her colon. The colon is suppose to start back up after a few days of rest, but hers did not. She developed pneumonia and went back to ICU. Once that was under control, the bowels still weren't working and she started having liver failure and turning yellow. The doctor said it was a matter of days. Four days later she went back to the nursing home.

Time passed and and she still wasn't eating and the colon wasn't doing much. I read that morphine can slow down the body and suggested we take her off of it as long as she wasn't in pain. Slowly she started eating, very little maybe a strawberry or two and a few bites of yogurt. About 2 weeks later they did a blood test and she was in need of a blood transfusion. We decided to do this even if she wasn't expected to live long. Once she had the transfusion she was no longer yellow and eventually started eating more, the bowels started working and she eventually started physical therapy.

Long story short, she is now home. The doctor said besides the septic shock, two surgeries in less than 3 weeks, plus pneumonia, he has never seen anyone come back from liver failure! He also said it is rare to see a family take care of an elderly parent the way we all bonded together and took care of her. Every day and sometimes multiple times we took turns being with her. My husband went every single day even if I had already gone. The doctor told him he hasn't seen any son as devoted to their mother as he is and it's true. She is so lucky to have him. She lives next door to us so it's a bit easier to take care of her now. While she has lost quite a bit of weight she is getting around really well and it is nothing short of a miracle that she is still with us.

So, with life a little bit back to normal we are hoping to start blogging a bit more. We are opening a new Etsy shop that you can see at the top of our blog and will be having a give away next week. Come back and check it out.
